Are you a friend of Jennifer Brunner on her Facebook campaign page yet? Jennifer posts updates every day, and supporters respond in the comments. It's a great way to stay in touch with our next U.S. Senator!
Paris Mariano posted this comment in response to Jennifer's update about a campaign appearance yesterday evening:
"And we are blessed to have you, a true American hero, going to the Senate! Woo hoo!!!
"Thank you for everything you did and went through for us last year!
"One shivers to imagine what might have been had you not stood in the breech so heroic and steadfast, as the bad guys were pullin out alllll the stops.
"The fur was really flyin round you and you were unflappable.
"Not just ohio, but the whole country marveled at you and your refusal to acquiesce to the darkest political forces this country has endured in a very long time.
"You make me proud to be a freshly transplanted Ohioan!
"Cheers to you!"
These comments followed an update about Jennifer's appearance in Avon Lake on Tuesday:
Larry Nearhood: "That was a great event last night, it is great to see their energy, they understand that the fight for change didn't end on November 4th but that it had only begun."
Amy Gray: "We had a fabulous time and met some wonderful people---my 7 year old was still talking about it this morning!"
Nita Torrence: "Congratulations to Avon Lake dems. Keep up the work."
Cheri Campbell: "What Nita said - it was a wonderful event on a picture-perfect lakefront summer evening. Thanks to Avon Lake Dems, Jennifer & the other elected officials."
Bridget Flynn: "It was so nice to meet you! Thanks for all the wonderful work you are doing!"
This comment is in response to Jennifer's update about attending President Obama's Health Care Town Hall in Shaker Heights:
Brooks Boron: "It was really great meeting you today! I was one of the students to ask about how people my age can help get involved changing the healthcare system! I spoke to you about the great Chautauqua, New York! I cant wait to help out on the campaign. I look forward to seeing you more!"

Yesterday it was my pleasure to attend a reception for Jennifer at Lake House in beautiful Avon Lake, Ohio, followed by the annual picnic of the Avon Lake Democratic Club. She was received enthusiastically by members of the club, who heard remarks by State Senator Sue Morano (D-Lorain) and State Representative Matt Lundy (D-Elyria) as well as Jennifer. See photographs from the event on Flickr and Facebook, and if you have photographs of Jennifer from events and appearances around the state please send them to me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) so I can share them with other suppporters!

Watch the video as Jennifer picks the winner in this weekend's contest to win lunch with Ohio's next United States Senator!
In an email note annnouncing the winner, Rafael Lopez of London, Ohio, campaign manager David Dettman has some stirring words about Jennifer:
"I signed on to Jennifer's campaign because I believe she will be a terrific Senator for Ohio who represents this state's great diversity. She will work with creativity, courage and commitment for everyday Ohioans and the people of this country to find innovative and economical solutions to the problems we face together. And I know you and I are involved in this campaign because we believe she can help us do that with the same kind of leadership she brought to our state as our Secretary of State. She has the courage to fight for us--and she will. Let's get her elected!"

I got a call last weekend that one of my best friends from high
school, Rene Apel, died last Saturday in California where she had
transplanted herself soon after high school. I kept in regular touch
with Rene, and when in California would visit with her. She died from
complications of breast cancer that she had treated for in 1993. Her
ultimate cause of death was acute leukemia, occurring after years of
continuing chemo treatments that neither shrunk the tumors in her upper
torso, nor allowed them to grow (probably brought on by aggressive
radiation treatments in 1993.)
One of my favorite memories of Rene was her last trip to NYC in
October 2007. She and our friend, Emily, and I had always planned from
high school to take a trip together when we were 50. We knew Rene was
failing somewhat, but she wanted to take the trip anyway, and we did.
While there for the weekend, we left the hotel for dinner but could not
find a cab, because it was Broadway show time. So we took a bicycle
propelled carriage down Lexington Avenue. All of a sudden, we hit a
bump, and Rene's blonde wig that she had named "Natasha" (because the
hair came from Russia) flew off and landed in the street behind us as
the cyclist kept on peddling. Emily and I ordered the bicycle
rider/driver to stop, I ran out of the carriage up the street, grabbed
poor Natasha sprawled on the street on Lexington Avenue before she
could get run over by a car and returned it to Rene. We laughed so hard
we almost cried. Even the bicycle rider/driver, who was from Turkey,
was laughing. He said he loved America.
It is painful and sad to lose a long-time friend like Rene, but these kinds of memories help.

Jennifer's impassioned protest against any further delays in passing health care reform with a public option is a featured post today at the Huffington Post. In her essay, Jennifer describes an intriguing conversation with an unconvinced young neighbor about health care reform, and urges everyone to get involved and help spread the word:
"We must step forward, recognize that the free market, by itself, as applied to health care doesn't make us free, but rather imprisons us in a vicious cycle of suffering, inequality, disparity and grief. The public option is the first step to stem the flood of loss and resulting damage.
"I know we can do this. Each one of us must search out the Merediths of this country and talk until we can't talk any more, and then keep on talking. This will only happen when ordinary Americans like you and me get off the couch, turn off the TV, read all we can read, write and email our Congresspeople, and talk to our neighbors and friends. President Obama needs us to support what is a gargantuan task. He proved we can do it with his election. Now let's do it again"
This is Jennifer's second featured blog at Huffington Post since she announced her campaign for the U.S. Senate. Her prior post there was a clarion call for marriage equality.

The site EconomyInCrisis.org has posted video of an interview with Jennifer by Craig Harrington about her campaign and her plans for helping to revive Ohio's troubled economy. The video can be viewed here, and the following is a description from the site:
"Feeling the pain from the worst recession since the Great Depression, Ohio's economically stricken economy is in dire need of a transformation and Brunner believes she is just the woman for the job.
"Creating jobs and restoring the economy will serve as Brunner's main focus. She intends to rejuvenate Ohio's manufacturing prowess by retooling and redeveloping Ohio's closed manufacturing plants, transforming them into green friendly production facilities. Through this overhaul Brunner believes Ohio can spearhead the change brewing throughout the nation.
"Having been beaten by America's "free trade" ideology Brunner also addresses the need to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement and reexamine its role in the World Trade Organization. America has been fundamentally disadvantaged through “free trade” policies that have turned the United States into a sinkhole, according to Brunner.
"On the financial front Brunner suggests that the U.S. adapt incentives for Americans to save more money individually which will create a stronger foundation for the financial industry from the bottom up. She also cites the need for more regulation in the financial industry as a whole."

Here's an interesting data point from an analysis of polls across the country by pollster Public Policy Polling. Drawing data from 16 polls taken over the last month in gubernatorial and senatorial races, PPP finds only three where Democratic candidates are leading their GOP counterparts among independent voters, and the biggest lead of any belongs to Jennifer Brunner at nine points. Long-time incumbent Russ Feingold has a seven point lead in WI-Sen. Lee Fisher has a fragile one-point lead over Rob Portman among independent voters in Ohio. The PPP poll data for Ohio comes from this June 23rd survey [pdf], which found Jennifer ahead of Rob Portman among independent voters by 35% to 26% and ahead among moderates by 45% to 22%.
With her base in central Ohio and family roots in rural counties, Jennifer has demonstrated the ability to draw votes in counties that are by no stretch Democratic strongholds. In 2006 she carried conservative-leaning Hamilton County against her Republican foe whose home base was there, Hamilton County Clerk of Courts Greg Hartmann.

Dear friend,
As you know,
we'll win this election for the U.S. Senate one vote at a time. My
favorite part of being on the campaign trail is talking to people
one-on-one, in their homes and their workplaces, learning about their
lives, their families and what they wish for and the challenges they
face. I am traveling and talking to Ohioans--Democrats, Republicans and
Independents. I am hearing their stories, understanding better how to
bring them together and empower them to craft solutions and build
change. But I cannot do this alone.
In the past I've been fortunate to be able to rely on strong,
grassroots support from everyday Ohioans to win my campaigns. I plan to
continue to do this. With over 1000 volunteers in less than 6 months, I
am on my way. It's important for me to stay in touch with you and many
new supporters to advise of upcoming events, important policy
statements and campaign updates.
In this new era of campaigns, many find that the easiest way to
communicate is through email. Whether it's at work or to a friend, we
can all send a quick email and reach someone miles away with a personal
contact. You have been incredibly supportive of my campaign and now I
need you to reach out to your personal circle of friends, family and
coworkers!
As a
gesture of my appreciation for your help, between now and Sunday at
11:59 pm, everyone who submits five valid email addresses to the
campaign will be entered into a drawing for lunch with me!
This campaign is an exciting collective--of individuals like you--and
me, of organizations representing people like you--and me. I will only
be successful with your help, and we must keep up the pressure to keep
the momentum going. Together, we can turn this seat now belonging to
Sen. George Voinovich BLUE! I'll keep working and letting you know what
you can do.
Thank you for all you have done and will do.
All the best,
Jennifer Brunner
P.S. Make sure to submit five email addresses by Sunday at 11:59 to win a chance at lunch with me

The political action committee of the National Organization for Women (NOW) has just announced that it endorses Jennifer Brunner for the United States Senate:
"NOW PAC is pleased to endorse Jennifer Brunner for the U.S. Senate. Brunner is a staunch supporter of women's rights and will be a leader in the Senate. Brunner's experience includes owning a small business, serving as a judge and currently, and currently working as Ohio's Secretary of State. . . .
"Brunner supports a woman's right to choose and to make her own health care decisions and believes right to safe, legal abortion must be protected. Her solid support of Marriage Equality as a matter of civil rights includes marriage, for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered individuals. In the Senate, she will continue to push for 'single payer' (government insured) health care and if not already passed, she will support the 'Employee Free Choice Act.'"
Go to the announcement to see video of Jennifer speaking at the 2009 National NOW Conference.

Hello Brunner Supporters!
We have been hard at work setting up the grassroots network necessary for a winning campaign. As a result, we now have 'County Captains' on the ground in more than 50 of Ohio's 88 counties, networking with their friends and their community to share Jennifer's vision for Ohio. We're well on the way to ensuring that Jennifer Brunner is the first woman elected by Ohio to the U.S. Senate, but we need your help!
As you know, support is strong for Jennifer in ALL of Ohio's counties and people across the state are anxious to get involved. Here's your chance! If you want to be an early and vital part of the campaign's field strategy, join the Brunner Brigade as a County or Precinct Captain. Captains will be involved in every aspect of the outreach program in their county. We're also looking for more terrific young people to join Students for Brunner on campuses all across Ohio. Your early involvement will mean a very small time commitment now, but it will have a huge impact on our winning strategy!
Sign up now!
For more information please contact me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or call 614-602-6532.
Sincerely,
Tiff Wolf
Outreach Director
P.S. Check out these two great articles on Jennifer, so you can spread the word about a candidate the Dayton Daily News calls a "renegade!"

With all due respect to long friendships with Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner and Lt. Governor Lee Fisher - my admiration for both of them and their great work on behalf of Ohioans - I have decided - after much thought - to endorse Jennifer Brunner in the Democratic Primary for the United States Senate.
Over the past few months I have witnessed Ohio's economic and social situations become increasingly more difficult for its citizens - from all walks of life - including my own. I believe that it is imperative that we elect a United States Senator who will be a creative, effective, strong partner with Senator Sherrod Brown, Governor Ted Strickland, and President Obama. I know that Jennifer Brunner will continue to work well with state and local government officials, with business and labor, with other civic and community leaders in meeting Ohio's many challenges - as she has demonstrated through her service to Ohioans for many years.
Jennifer Brunner has improved Ohio's standing nationally with strength, determination, and success - demonstrated by the manner in which she handled the 2008 Presidential Election in Ohio. I am confident she will apply those skills to helping Ohio achieve more for all the Citizens of Ohio.
Jennifer Brunner will bring her talent and experience - dealing with other strong individuals - to the United States Senate. Ohio will have another champion - in the United States Senate - in this difficult time - dedicated to renewing Ohio's position of economic strength in our country.
Jennifer Brunner's "Courage" - acknowledged by the 2008 Kennedy "Profile in Courage Award" has convinced me that she is the best person to serve Ohioans - at this pivotal time - in the United States Senate. I support Jennifer Brunner - in the Democratic Primary for the United States Senate - and encourage others to support her as well - with your time, treasure, and talent.
With great respect for all the Citizens of Ohio,
Barbara Gould
