Jobs

Jobs are the number one issue in my campaign. but jobs can't be considered in a vacuum. Issues like health care and fair trade policies go hand in hand with developing a sustainable recovery in Ohio and stable communities for the years to come. My jobs platform includes jump-starting the rebuilding of our infrastructure with stimulus funding, easing health insurance costs and credit for small businesses so that they can create more jobs, creating local job-creation task forces, permitting the jobless to take on part-time work without forfeiting their unemployment benefits, and protecting pension and health care plans for retirees. Women and Their Families

I held twelve women's forums throughout Ohio from November through April to hear from women and men in Ohio their concerns about workplace flexibility, child care, elder care and health issues specific to women. My goal has been to create national child care and elder care policies and to reform workplace rules to be more family friendly to improve the quality of life for Ohioans and their families. Hundreds of Ohioans participated and shared their thoughts and experiences. Read more

Trade

"Free trade" resulting from U.S. trade agreements such as NAFTA and CAFTA has resulted in huge trade deficits for the U.S., hurting our middle class workers who have lost jobs to outsourcing while corporations have scoured the world for the cheapest labor in countries with the fewest health, safety and environmental regulations. These agreements have enabled foreign countries to ship what their low-wage workers produce to the United States while blocking many U.S. products from entering their countries, all while we have bound ourselves to decisions of the World Trade Organization that hinder a fair trade balance. Urban Agenda

I plan to make a cornerstone of my tenure as Ohio’s next United States Senator the mission to help renew our cities to reach their full potential once again. This will not be an easy task. It demands innovative thinking, strategic reinvention and relentless collaboration that is unprecedented. And the lion’s share of this will inevitably fall to the civic, business and community leaders in our cities, but there is a clear and compelling role for the federal government and your U.S. Senators to play. Addressing Climate Change

Flawed trade policies have distorted the benefits of America’s tax, environmental and labor laws, and have perpetuated an artificial dilemma that economic prosperity and a sustainable environment are mutually exclusive. The commercialization of conservation, efficiency and renewable energy technologies and products in a way that contributes to greater community economic and environmental well-being, is the goal of clean energy legislation. A strong and concerted movement in this direction by our state’s leaders in government, manufacturing, business, labor, nonprofit and civic organizations offers an extraordinary opportunity to the Midwest, and especially Ohio, to revitalize economic development while enhancing environmental protection and preserving the quality of life in Ohio for generations to come. Health Care

People should be able to keep their employer-supplied health insurance if they want to, but everyone needs access to health care, not just the wealthy or the impoverished. This is so important for a strong middle class and for strengthening the impact of improvements in education—a healthy and educated population can progress much more quickly. Reforming our health care system will improve our economy and allow small business to grow and create more jobs. Read more

Clean Energy and Energy Independence

Because we face a rapidly growing world population, policies for energy independence should be crafted with a view beyond our borders and taking into account a growing world population that will use increasingly more resources. We should free ourselves at every level of the energy chain, first finding energy sources that are abundant and low cost without hidden environmental, social or national security costs. Read more

Banking Reform

I am the only U.S. Senate candidate from Ohio who does not take campaign contributions from banks that took TARP funds. I routinely have stood up to bankers and Wall Street financial institutions. Read more

Continued Election Reforms

In wake of the blow that the Citizens United decision of the U.S. Supreme Court dealt to free and fair elections, I am uniquely qualified to pursue legislation that will require full disclosure of corporation-funded election advertising and ban foreign-owned corporations from funding election ads. I cleaned up Ohio's elections, and I will bring the same courage and determination to reforming election law at the federal level. Read more

Social Security and Deficit Reduction

I maintain an unbreakable commitment to protecting Social Security and to the values that underlie it. Social Security is designed not only to provide cash benefits, but also peace of mind, a sense of security, and to reinforce the dignity of individuals and families. Read more

Education

Education is the ticket to a better standard of living for individual Americans and their families and for communities as a whole. As the daughter of a teacher of special needs children, I am acutely aware of the need to provide mainstream public educational opportunities to those children on both ends of the spectrum, with physical or cognitive disabilities and challenges, and with gifts that will aid our society for the future. Immigration Reform

The United States' current immigration system has failed. There is a desperate need to enact comprehensive immigration reform to avert further human suffering and senseless economic loss. Read more

Veterans

Our nation's veterans health care system must be fully examined and reformed to provide comprehensive services to those returning from war torn areas of our world, including adequate mental health services on both inpatient and outpatient bases. Read more

Workers’ Rights

I support the "Employee Free Choice Act" as a means to make a secret ballot vote on collective bargaining the choice of the workers and not the as a stall tactic of some employers who would use it to deny employees collective bargaining rights. Read more

Civil Rights For All

I support Marriage Equality as a matter of civil rights. I have already supported state legislation to prohibit discrimination on the basis of LGBT in housing, employment, and accommodation and will continue to support and sponsor it in the U.S. Senate. I support repealing the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy in the U.S. military. Read more

Reproductive Freedom

I support a woman's right to choose and to make her own health care decisions. Read more

Protecting the Environment

There is no question that the effects of global warming are already underway. The failure to meet this challenge is something my state and country cannot afford. One of the best ways to immediately conserve our energy is to better weatherize our buildings. I have proposed as part of an urban agenda that residents of public housing be trained in cooperation with unionized trades to weatherize their own housing to make public housing more energy efficient and to provide sustained skills for future employment for residents of subsidized housing. I also am enthused about the opportunities that are specific to Ohio, with its skilled trades and strong manufacturing base to build the green technologies that will replace expensive and dirty fossil fuel use and production to meet our energy needs with clean energy and sustainable technology. Emission control is a key issue and must be addressed. While the short-term costs of imposing emission control is undeniable, it is likewise undeniable that the cost of doing nothing is much greater, and doing nothing involves not only the financial and economic opportunity cost, but the cost of diminished health of our citizens. While it is understandable that nuclear energy is considered by many to be a solution to the challenge of energy production, its use should be limited to the period of time that it takes the infant renewable energy industry to accelerate innovation to the point that it can replace the need for nuclear energy. Wind, thermal, solar, geothermal, and technologies under development will ultimately answer the challenge of protecting our environment and ending exploitation of the natural essence of our country and our planet. Middle East Policy

I support a Jewish democracy for the State of Israel and will be a stalwart defender of Israel's security. I believe that reaching a sustainable Israel-Palestinian two-state solution, including a sustainable, peaceful, contiguous, and democratic Palestinian state with the 1967 borders as a guideline, is the best way to ensure the long-term security of the State of Israel and is also in America's best interest. Iran's development of nuclear weapons represents an existential threat to Israel and is an unacceptable outcome for the long-term strategic interest of the United States, and targeted sanctions designed to hinder Iran's ability to develop these weapons are needed. I support an immediate freeze on the construction of new Israeli settlements, but I believe it is necessary to recognize realities on the ground for some of the more established settlements and I recognize Israel's right to construct a security barrier. The United States should pursue a policy of engagement of the Muslim world without an anti-Islam bias. Read more

Second Amendment Rights and Responsible Gun Ownership

I support the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, preserving the right that has existed since colonial days to bear arms. At the same time I endorse Congressional action to shut down the illegal trafficking in guns that puts deadly weapons in the hands of criminals and juveniles. Read more

Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been the major contributor to our growing national deficit. The foreign nation building that will be required in the lengthy endeavor that is Afghanistan should begin now both in Afghanistan and at home. We can and must work smarter in Afghanistan by gaining the trust of its people away from the Taliban with a multi-faceted approach that employs humanitarian aid and education for its citizens while protecting the United States against terrorist attacks germinated in this and other countries.
