Jennifer Brunner, a former member of the Franklin County Board of Elections and former Franklin County Common Pleas Court judge, stopped Saturday morning in Chillicothe to announce her candidacy for Ohio Secretary of State. Brunner, a Democrat, is running for the position because, "It's a job that I've wanted to do for a long time," she said in a phone interview with the Gazette. "I love election work," she said. "A lot of your focus is on protecting the system." Brunner said she was frustrated by incumbent Secretary of State J. Kenneth Blackwell during the November 2004 election. "It's time for someone to exert some leadership - someone who actually cares about elections and someone who wants the job," she said. "Voting is the mechanics of how people participate in democracy. If people don't trust the process, you're going to lose that valuable participation of what you need for a good democracy." Should Brunner win the November 2006 election, there are several changes she would implement. She said she would have a team of investigators available to help county boards of elections investigate allegations of voter fraud, institute a statewide program of poll worker training and incentives to bring in new poll workers, and she would allow poll workers to work half-shifts.
