DNC Chairman Howard Dean & Donna Brazile Discuss Jennifer Brunner

August 07, 2007

In a recent interview with Anastacia Pantsios of the Cleveland Free Times, Democratic Party chairman Howard Dean and Donna Brazile (campaign manager for the Gore-Lieberman campaign) discussed Jennifer Brunner. Portions of the interview are reprinted here with permission.

Howard Dean: "Fortunately in Ohio you have one of the very best secretaries of state in America, Jennifer Brunner, who has already as you know, disbanded or called for the resignations and gotten them from the Cuyahoga elections committee which was responsible for some of the shenanigans in 2004."

"In a state like that where we know the secretary of state is very, very good, my guess is that if we were to find things of the nature you describe we would pass those findings on to the secretary of state and she would deal with that. We have an enormous faith in her. She's an extraordinarily competent person and has shown herself to be so early on. So if there are problems that are not of a partisan nature that are simply a mechanical problem that we would pass that along."

"But in a state like Ohio, again, where you do have an excellent secretary of state, our assumption going in to this is going to be 90% of the problems are going to be not because of malevolence or partisanship but just because of training problems and resources and that can best be handled by competent, qualified secretaries of state."

Donna Brazile: "Let me add, Governor Dean, that the secretary of state just established an office within the secretary of state's office which will serve as a clearinghouse for issues and concerns on voting. Her number one goal is to clean up some of the electoral mess that we've experienced in the past in Ohio and she's implementing a number of changes including maintaining an accurate statewide voter data base so I think she's been aggressive in trying to promote a great deal of change in her office and also trying to bring some transparency to the process. She's also funding the training of poll workers and the recruitment of new poll workers so I think she's doing a fantastic job as well."
